elderlywomen they may be atheromatous, and we have in one case founddefinite sclerotic changes in the arteries in a uterus removed foruncontrollable bleeding (see Plate II). This uterus was not enlarged,and structm^ally it was found that there had been a considerablereplacement of muscle by fibrous tissue (Plate II), owing to thepatient having passed the age of the climateric. Some observers, including Beckwith Whitehouse, have advancedthe view that some cases of chronic metritis are due to syphilis, butit has never been proved that syphilis alone can produce any of thechanges which have been described as characteristic of the threemain varieties. Mechanism of the Bleeding. There are probably two main factorswhich determine the character and the severity of the bleeding ^ incases of chronic metritis. The first is the associated thickening ofthe endometrium, which is present in a considerable proportion ofcases ; the second is the mechanical obstacle to efficient retraction PLATE XII)
